What Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is

A martial art, combat sport and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training.

The Classes:

BJJ Fundamental (Beginner)

Here we focus on learning the basic movements and skills that are essential to progressing in jiu jitsu and establishing a balanced game. A typical 60 minute class consists of a light warm-up, stretching, observing and drilling techniques involving various submissions, sweeps, escapes, takedowns, etc., then ending with specific training (a drill that simulates live sparring).

BJJ Advanced

Advanced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a class with which you may train within and refine your skills for life. It is here where members begin to specialize, finding their own game and often becoming dominant top or bottom players. Warm-ups are more relaxed or intense depending on upcoming competitions or events etc. but the concentration of drills and techniques becomes much more advanced involving sequences, deception, and other specialized BJJ strategy.

Most 60 minute classes end with 30-40 minutes of smooth, controlled sparring (rolling). Currently students may begin attending Advanced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after earning the first stripe on their white belt. For committed students this level can typically be achieved within 2-4 months.

Submission Grappling (No-Gi BJJ)

Submission Grappling is essentially Brazilian Jiu Jitsu minus the uniform (Gi). Typical gear consisting of a form fitting rash guard or T- shirt and shorts. Due to the lack of grabbable clothing, this style of BJJ forces competitors to use a limited amount of body hooks and handles to subdue their opponents (rather than rely on the large number of hand grips and Gi chokes available when wearing traditional uniforms and belts).

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Kids BJJ provides children with the amazing benefits of jiu-jitsu, instilling in them self-defense, self-discipline, and self-confidence at an early age. Student ages in this class range from 5 years up to 12.

Open Mat

Open Mat is an open time period with no instruction allowing members to work on any aspect of their game that they desire. The mat is often split between a variety of students practicing both Gi and No-Gi rolling as well as a few working together on specific training and conditioning. Beginner students are permitted and encouraged to attend Open Mat in addition to their fundamental instruction.
